How to take care of and maintain your brushes.

Us ladies spend a ridiculous amount of money on make-up products, beauty products, beauty accessories, make-up brushes.. Basically anything beauty related, right? So it's a must to take care of them all properly.

In this post I'll show you all how I take care of my make-up brushes; I've spent good money on them and I want them to last for as long as possible!!

** How to keep the numbers from rubbing off? **

Practically all of my make-up brushes are from MAC, and it's a right pain when the number rubs off! I like for my brushes to look as new as possible, so to make sure the number stays on I apply one coat of any clear nail polish on them.

* This was my first ever MAC brush, it's the 116 Blush Brush, and as you can see the number has rubbed off, and is pretty much unreadable :

* Now here's a picture of a brush, the 187 Duo Fibre Brush, that I've had for quite a while, but the second I got it, I applied one coat of clear nail polish on to it.. See the difference!

** How to keep your brushes clean? **

It's a must to clean your brushes on a regular basis. Make-up brushes can contain a lot of bacteria, dirt, and natural face oils. If you apply make-up with a dirty brush it could possibly lead to a breakout. Your make-up also applies much better when the brush is clean.

This is how I keep my brushes clean and as new as ever :

1. Every couple of days I use the MAC Brush Cleanser. The product will clean, condition and disinfect your brushes and it also keeps the fibres lasting longer.

I apply a little bit of the brush cleanser on to a tissue or paper towel and then gently wipe my brush back and forth on the tissue.

* In the picture below I cleaned my 217 Blending Brush, and as you can see, it looks as good as new afterwards, and it literally took me 30 seconds to remove all the eyeshadow off it.

This product works like magic, you can see all the make-up come off within a minute or so and it dries quickly; you can literally use your brush within minutes of being cleaned with this brush cleanser. Magic I tell you! I would recommend you all to get this product.

2. Even though the brush cleanser helps to keep you brushes clean on a daily basis, it's very important to wash them properly every 1 - 2 weeks.

* Start of by rinsing your brush in lukewarm water; make sure the water isn't hot!!

* Put a little bit of shampoo in your hand (I use Johnson's baby shampoo), then gently swirl the brush around in circular motions and work up a foamy lather, then rinse the brush off with water.

* Repeat this step until until the water from your brush is coming out clean and you're sure all the make-up has been removed.

* Gently pat out any excess water and reshape your brush into its original shape, your brushes will dry in the shape you left them so this is a very important step!

* Place them on a towel and leave them overnight to dry.. Do not try and dry them with heat (e.g. hair dryer) that will just ruin your brushes.

* Once dried, fluff them up.

* Every month or so I'll give my brushes a little treat and apply a tiny amount of conditioner after shampooing them and rinse it out after a minute or two.

Please excuse the crapiness of these pictures, I under estimated how hard it would be to wash my brush and take pictures at the same time, not easy I tell you! But the pictures basically show how when you rinse the brush each time the water gets cleaner.

** How to store you brushes? **

Firstly if I was you I'd have a special pouch or container just for your brushes.
I want to get this MAC brush roll!

Make sure that whatever you're storing them in is spacious as you don't want your brushes to be all cramped up and get bent out of shape!

Also, I know a lot of people who like to leave their brushes out in the open, in a basket it their bathroom or something like that, if you do that, the don't. The dust and bacteria that's in the air will land and settle on your brush.

Phew this is one long post! I hope you found this post helpful and if you have any questions, leave them in the comment box!

  4. I have always used Johnson's baby shampoo to clean my brushes as I thought that the only way to clean them was to deep-clean them like that, so I was really impressed with the MAC brush-cleaner and the job it did on that brush for a quick in between clean. I'm definitely going to purchase some of that.
PS - I thought I was so clever using clear polish to seal my brushes and that I was the only one who was dead against having brushes out - I have defo found a kindred brush spirit! xoxox

  8. What a great tip to put nail varnish over the number! I hate when it rubbs of and it does that very quickly on the MAC brushes. I will definately start putting nail varnish over it! Thanks!

  9. I put clear nail polish all over my handles! lol. I just dont like looking at the empty space left if I just paint over the number. No matter how I used to do it, the line looked way too lopsided. So I took a chance and painted the entire handle. I dried it with handle tip pointing downwards and voila! wonderful finish!
